Andy Vick - Membership Secretary

Andy Vick is our new Membership Secretary. We asked Andy to tell us a bit about himself:

"Andy  Vick born  in Newport.

As a kid I became a huge rugby fan at the age of about ten.  An Uncle of mine was heavily involved in the WRU at the time and was one of the stalwarts running Newport Saracens RFC. I used to go to home and away matches on a regular basis with him and fell in love with the game.

I tried my hand at rugby at school and played it until I was fourteen. Unfortunately, my football skills on the pitch were far better than my rugby skills and even though I continued to play football right up to my early 30’s, rugby has always been my passion.

After leaving school at sixteen, I eventually joined Gwent Police in 1977 and after five years transferred to London where I spent the next twenty-five or so years in the Met Police, retiring in June 2007. Always plenty of rugby to get to see in and around the M25, especially London Welsh and still easy to come back home for international games.

On retirement in 2007 my wife, Paula (who is from the Rhondda) and I moved to Cyprus to live. We stayed there for 12 years before moving back to Wales in August 2019. Initially we rented a property in Pencoed but eventually we were extremely lucky to find ourselves the perfect home in Bryncae in May 2022.

Although lucky enough to have been fully retired for some time now, I do volunteer for a rugby charity called SOS Kitaid. As the collector/co-ordinator for Wales, I get to visit rugby clubs and rugby fans all over Wales to collect kit. I really enjoy seeing the grounds and club houses of all levels of rugby in Wales and have met some great rugby minded people as a result. The charity has for over 20 years recycled unwanted new and used rugby kit and with the help of World Rugby distribute it to disadvantaged youngster and teams all over the globe.

Finding ourselves in this great village, as soon as we were settled in, I joined Llanharan RFC, and I am really pleased that I have been able to take up the role of membership secretary with the club and to get more involved with the community."
